Why SEO and GEO overlap more than the marketing diagrams suggest
There is a temptation to present SEO and GEO as two separate boxes.
Reality is messier.
Google's own 2026 guidance is particularly useful here. Google says that its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. AI Overviews and AI Mode can use retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out to retrieve relevant pages from the Search index while building an answer. [3]
Google also explicitly states that there are no special technical requirements for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond eligibility for Google Search and a searchable snippet. [4]
That means technical SEO is not obsolete when the answer becomes generative.
It becomes infrastructure.
However, the overlap is not perfect.
A 2025 Semrush study compared Google results with AI Mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity across 5,000 keywords and more than 150,000 citations. In that sample, Perplexity showed over 91% domain overlap and 82% URL overlap with Google's top 10, while Google AI Overviews showed around 86% domain overlap and 67% URL overlap.
